Based in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, GeoDura is set to be the state’s first multi-source offshore carbon storage hub. Carbon storage cleans up existing industry - capturing carbon dioxide (CO₂) and keeping it safely and permanently underground instead of entering the atmosphere as greenhouse gases.
Hubs like GeoDura are built under strict regulation, with the community and environment in mind and with the intention of cleaning air, fostering economic growth, and preserving the beauty and diversity of coastal habitats.
Transportation and storage for up to 9 million tonnes of CO₂ per year
Safe, new-build pipelines connecting GeoDura to Lake Charles and Port Arthur industrial corridors
GeoDura is a U.S. Dept. of Energy CarbonSAFE Phase III project, undergoing detailed geologic characterization, permitting, and engineering efforts to become a safe and viable carbon storage site
GeoDura is perfectly located to service the region’s existing industrial facilities and anticipated low-carbon projects. The offshore lease space is 24,181 acres in size and has a total estimated storage capacity of 270 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.
GeoDura is committed to being a good neighbor and helping Cameron Parish thrive. In addition to attending community events and sponsoring local organizations, 30% of all GeoDura’s lease and injection payments to the state are given back to the parish. This totals $600 million in new revenue for Cameron Parish by 2060 to make investments in the places and people that make the area special.
Funding improved roads, bridges, and utilities for long-term success
Opportunities to build or invest in school facilities and programs, parish police and fire departments, local libraries, and more
Support local initiatives, school sports teams, local organizations, community events and more
Fund management, restoration and preservation efforts for local beaches, waterways and wildlife refuges
Existing and new-build industrial sites and the surrounding air is cleaner with captured CO₂
Creates new career opportunities in carbon management and new greenfield projects as industry shifts
GeoDura leverages decades of sound scientific research and time-tested practical application for its onshore and offshore CO₂ transportation and permanent geologic storage. GeoDura is subject to strict technical, financial, safety, and reporting requirements to maintain an active Class VI permit for its carbon storage activities.
CO₂ is not a volatile compound, meaning it poses no risk of combustion. Around-the-clock monitoring and alert systems are in place throughout the pipeline network and at injection sites, and GeoDura has a comprehensive emergency response plan to ensure community safety.
CO₂ has been transported safely by pipeline for decades. GeoDura's new-build pipelines feature dedicated monitoring systems and follow robust safety protocols.
Carbon injection and storage practices have been safely utilized in the U.S. since the 1970s. GeoDura's targeted injection sites feature thick rock formations that trap CO₂ gases more than a mile beneath the ocean floor and dedicated monitoring techniques to detect any unexpected movement of CO₂ and ensure storage security.
GeoDura uses established pipeline corridors whenever possible. Our pipelines, sites, and equipment are intentionally placed to minimize interactions with local communities and impact to coastal habitats.
Carbon storage hubs like GeoDura facilitate direct economic growth through lease and royalty payments to the state, tax revenue, and labor income.
Projects like ours are also likely to generate other economic opportunities for the community, including new jobs and additional industrial investment because of the proximity to CO₂ storage.
GeoDura generates new jobs for Cameron Parish and the surrounding communities through facility construction and long-term operations. New low-carbon developments with carbon storage needs also bring new career opportunities to the area.
Labor income includes compensation and income from direct (jobs and construction) and indirect (supplies and business transactions) sources, and induced community spending from individuals and households.
Revenues from property taxes are projected to be significant over time, with taxes collected from the related platforms, pump station, in-field gathering lines and wells related to GeoDura's activities.
As a CCS project, GeoDura provides direct funding to the region through lease and injection fee payments made to the state in addition to tax revenue and labor income. Under current projections, this is set to total nearly $2 billion in state revenue (of which $600 million goes to Cameron Parish) by 2060.
Under Louisiana R.S. 30:149, lease and injection fee revenue is split 70/30 between the State and Cameron Parish. The estimates do not include annual upward adjustments.
As an attractive CCS project, GeoDura improves the region's competitiveness for further investment. These investments could include new-build industrial projects, interstate trade opportunities, and more.
